Cape Girardeau Floodwall Toe Drain Replacement

Design-Bid-Build replacement of the toe drain system along the Cape Girardeau Floodwall. In August 2016, RKE completed a time-sensitive phase involving removal of existing BNSF railroad tracks, excavation, and replacement of the toe drain under the tracks, plus reconstruction of the BNSF subgrade and tracks in a confined space, working around the clock and completing within the mandatory 72-hour window. Coordination involved USACE, BNSF, the City of Cape Girardeau, MoDOT, and various utilities.

Work encompassed excavation, pipe demolition, granular filter installation, pipe installation, bentonite cap, manhole installation, high-early concrete backfill, and subgrade and subballast replacement — all within a narrow corridor between the concrete Mississippi River Floodwall and adjacent businesses. In November 2016, a separate phase exposed existing sheet piling, cut it at design grade, and installed a flowable-fill sheet pile cap to connect it with the floodwall. RKE self-performed 100% of the contract.
